Good Start

carefulaccuratecalm

A gentle start, which is exactly what a first round looks like. Play Level 1 two or three more times and you will notice your fingers moving before you have finished reading the question.

Getting There

improvingfocusedsteady

You are clearly improving. This is already quick enough for everyday mental math, and every extra round shaves another fraction of a second off each answer.

Fast

fastsharpconfident

A very good score. Your brain is handling these almost automatically now — you are no longer working through the steps. Try the harder level, you are ready for it.

Very Fast

lightningprecisepractised

Few people reach this number in a single minute. Your working memory is strong and you answer almost as fast as you read. Share your score and challenge someone.

Human Calculator

This is a rare score. You calculate faster than most people can type the digits. All that is left is the daily challenge and beating your own record every morning.

What is the Math Sprint game?

Math Sprint is a short math game that shows you one arithmetic problem after another — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — and asks you to solve them in your head while the clock runs down. A round lasts sixty seconds, and your goal is to collect as many correct answers as you can before time is up. No paper, no pencil, no account: open the page, pick a challenge and start.

How to play

Choose one of the five challenges, then type each answer on the number pad on your phone, or with the keyboard if you are on a computer. Your answer is checked automatically as soon as it is as long as the correct one and the next question appears straight away, so you never waste a tap on a confirm button. Mistyped a digit? The delete key takes it back.

The five challenges

  • Level 1: addition and subtraction with small numbers up to twenty — good for warming up and for children.
  • Level 2: multiplication joins in and the numbers grow, so it takes noticeably more focus.
  • Level 3: all four operations including division — the hardest of the timed rounds.
  • No Mistakes: no clock and no time pressure, but the first wrong answer ends the run instantly.
  • Daily Challenge: the same questions for every player on the same day, replaced with a fresh set each morning.

Why mental math is worth practising

Fast mental arithmetic is direct exercise for your working memory and for how quickly you can recall a fact. Students get a far more enjoyable way to lock in their times tables than rote repetition, and adults get a one-minute daily warm-up for the mind. Most usefully, repeated rounds turn simple operations into an automatic response — which is what pays off when you are splitting a bill or working out a discount in a shop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Math Sprint game?

It is a short math game that shows you one arithmetic problem after another — addition, subtraction, multiplication or division — and asks you to solve them in your head before the clock runs out. Your goal is to get as many correct answers as possible in sixty seconds.

How do I play?

Pick the challenge that suits your level, then type each answer on the on-screen number pad or with your keyboard. Your answer is checked automatically as soon as it is the right length and the next question appears immediately, so you never lose time tapping a confirm button.

What is the difference between the five challenges?

The first three levels step up in operations and number size within sixty seconds. No Mistakes has no clock but ends at your first wrong answer. The Daily Challenge gives every player the same questions on the same day and changes every day.

Is my score saved?

Your best score for each challenge is stored in your own browser only. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed. Clearing your browser data resets it.

Does playing actually help?

Fast mental arithmetic is good exercise for working memory and recall speed — useful for students revising their times tables and for adults keeping their mind sharp. It is still practice and fun, though, not an intelligence test.
